The short answer
On a dating profile, "420-friendly" means the person is comfortable with cannabis. They might use it themselves, or they might not, but they won't be put off if you do. It's a signal of attitude, not a description of how often someone smokes.
That difference matters. "420-friendly" covers the person who has an edible twice a year, the person who smokes every evening, and the person who never touches it but has no problem being around it. If you want to know which one you're talking to, you'll still need to ask.
Where does "420" come from?
The most widely repeated story traces it to a group of California high school students in the early 1970s who met at 4:20 in the afternoon to look for a rumoured cannabis crop. The time became a code, the code spread, and 20 April (4/20 in US date format) became an informal day for cannabis culture.
There are plenty of other theories, most of them myths, such as a police radio code or the number of chemicals in the plant. You don't need the history to use the phrase; it's just useful to know it's slang rather than anything official.

420-friendly vs other phrases
- 420-friendly: okay with cannabis, may or may not use it.
- Stoner: someone who uses cannabis regularly and usually says so with a smile. Some people love the label, others find it reductive.
- Social smoker or occasional: uses it now and then, often with friends.
- Sober-curious or sober: doesn't use alcohol or cannabis, or is cutting back.
- Medical: uses cannabis on a doctor's advice where that's allowed. It's personal, and nobody owes you the details.
How to say it on your own profile
Be specific enough that the right people recognise themselves. "420-friendly" on its own is fine, but a few extra words do a lot of work:
- "420-friendly, mostly weekends."
- "Don't smoke myself but totally relaxed about it."
- "Evening smoker, still up early for the gym."
- "Into edibles, not into smoke indoors."
Then talk about everything else. A profile that's only about cannabis reads like a menu, not a person. Mention what you do on a Sunday, what you're watching, where you'd like to travel. The cannabis line tells people you'll get along; the rest tells them why they'd want to meet you.
Reading someone else's profile
Treat "420-friendly" as an opening, not an answer. A good first question is about their habits rather than the plant: "What does a good weekend look like for you?" usually tells you more than "How much do you smoke?"

A note on the law
Being 420-friendly is an attitude, and the rules on cannabis vary a lot from one country, state or territory to the next. We don't give legal advice. If you're unsure what's allowed where you live, check your local rules before you buy, carry or use anything.
Where it's simply assumed
On mainstream apps, writing "420-friendly" can feel like taking a risk. On Pot Dating it's the starting point: the whole site is built for cannabis lovers and the people who like them. See 420-friendly dating on Pot Dating for how that works.
