First, a few ground rules
The point of a first meet is to see if there's a spark, and that's easier with a clear head. Many people prefer to save cannabis for a later date, once there's trust. Meet somewhere public, tell a friend where you'll be, and sort out your own way home. Never drive after using cannabis, and only use it where the law allows; we don't give legal advice, so check your local rules.
With that said, here are dates that suit relaxed, cannabis-friendly people, whether or not anyone lights up.
Low-key first dates
- A food market or street-food night. Lots to look at, lots to share, and nobody has to sit across a table in silence. Splitting three small dishes is a better icebreaker than ordering one each.
- A record shop or vintage market, then coffee. Browsing gives you something to talk about, and what people pick up says a lot about them.
- A long walk with a destination. A park, a river path or a viewpoint, finishing at a cafe. Walking side by side is easier than face to face for nervous people.
- A comedy night. If you laugh at the same things, that's a good sign. If you don't, you've still had a night out.

Second and third dates
- Cook something together. Pick a recipe neither of you has tried. It's playful, it involves teamwork, and there's dinner at the end.
- A gig or a small festival. Live music is a natural fit for a lot of 420-friendly people. Smaller venues make it easier to actually talk.
- A planetarium or an aquarium. Dim lights, strange creatures, slow pace. Some of the best conversations start with "wait, look at that one."
- A day trip by train. A seaside town, a hill walk, a village pub. Nobody has to drive, and the journey is part of the date.
- Pottery, painting or a hands-on class. You'll make something terrible together, which is half the fun.
Nights in
Once you know each other a little and you're both comfortable, a night in can be the most relaxed date of all.
- Film night with a theme. Each of you picks one film the other hasn't seen. Snacks are compulsory.
- Board games or a co-op video game. Working together on a puzzle shows how someone handles a bit of pressure.
- Make a playlist for each other. Ten songs that explain you. Then listen to both, properly, with the phone face down.
- Stargazing from a garden or balcony. A blanket, a free stargazing app and a clear night is all it takes.
If one of you doesn't use cannabis, every one of these works just as well. See dating a stoner when you don't smoke for how mixed couples keep things comfortable.
Making it easy to say no
The best 420-friendly dates are the ones where nobody feels pressured. If you're the one who smokes, offer once and drop it. If you're not in the mood, say so without apologising. Being relaxed about other people's choices is the whole point of being 420-friendly. Not sure what the phrase covers? Read what 420-friendly means.
Finding someone to try these with
Date ideas are only useful if you have someone to take. On Pot Dating, cannabis is understood from the first message, so you can spend the chat planning the date rather than testing the water. Start with cannabis dating on Pot Dating.
Questions people ask
Is it a good idea to smoke on a first date?
Many people prefer to wait until they know each other. Keep a first date clear-headed, public and safe, and only use cannabis where the law allows.
What's a good 420-friendly date if one of us doesn't smoke?
Anything built around food, music or something to look at: a market, a gig, a class or a film night all work well sober.
How do I suggest a date without it being awkward?
Name a plan and a time: "There's a street-food night on Thursday, fancy it?" A specific offer is easier to say yes to.
